Our story is love over many sightings rather than love at first sight. Mark and I first met during the summer break my first year at university. I was working in a pizza restaurant and he came in with his football team during the Saturday lunchtime rush. I thought that he looked familiar but I wasn’t sure until he asked me if we’d had a class together. I got a bit flustered while taking such a large order from a group of rowdy blokes, so I just sort of nodded and smiled in answer to his question. I didn’t really have the time to search my memory to confirm whether or not we’d had class together.
I did, however, have time to get a good look at him while I was making their drinks and although I still wasn’t sure where I’d seen him before I knew that I liked what I saw. They ate their lunch (very loudly, I might add) and on their way out the door he looked over to me and waved goodbye. I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t get a chance to talk more, but the next wave of customers soon distracted me and I didn’t really think about him again.

Later that summer, my sister Amanda and I went on a trip to Barcelona. On our last evening there we were having some drinks at one of the cafes on Las Ramblas and Mark walked past the cafe with a friend. At first I wasn’t sure it was him and I didn’t really know what to do even if it was, so I just carried on chatting with my sister.
I kept looking for him, hoping that he’d come back by. About thirty minutes later he did and we made eye contact with each other. He sort of did a double take and then he smiled and came over to our table. He asked jokingly if we had seen each other somewhere before. We invited him and his friend to sit down with us. I felt really nervous and couldn’t think of much to say. To be honest I felt like an idiot and was sure I kept blushing every time he spoke to me. I was actually relieved that it was quite late and Amanda and I had to leave after a few drinks to get up early for our flight home. Mark and his friend walked us back to our hotel and I managed to stumble through a conversation about how weird it was that we kept running into each other. I was surprised at how much I fancied him-it just seemed to hit me and I had a feeling that there was no going back.

Back at university, I was in the library getting books for a class and I literally turned a corner and bumped into him. We just sort of stood there for a minute grinning at each other. Once again I could feel myself blushing. He asked if I wanted to go get a coffee so that we could map out our trajectories.
We went to the closest cafe and stayed there until it closed. It was amazing how much we had in common-we both liked all the same music, films, books and television shows; we had been to the same places on holiday and sometimes we’d been there at the same time. It seemed as if we’d had loads of opportunities to meet each other-we wondered what the chances were that we had sat near to each other in a restaurant or a train or something.
He walked me back to my house and said we’d be stupid not to arrange to meet up again, after all we’d be bumping into each other again whether we planned it or not. We set a date for that weekend and we’ve been inseparable ever since. I’ve never been too much of a believer in fate and all that sort of stuff but I can’t deny that something kept bringing me and Mark together. Whatever it was, I am so thankful that it did.
